"Central Otago is where I was raised, it’s in my blood. It inspires me to pursue the impossible, the creation of the Perfect Pinot."
Alan Peters-Oswald
An impromptu trek to a restaurant nestled high above the picturesque town of Queenstown in late 2004 was to provide the inspiration behind the name Nanny Goat Vineyard. Heading off to take in some breath-taking scenery, good food and of course some great Central Otago Pinot Noir, what was supposed to be a relaxing stroll quickly transformed into an arduous, unplanned deviation as the gentle terrain quickly transformed, leaving all concerned to navigate some rather perilous ground. A lighthearted comment likening the group to a herd of Nanny Goats struck a chord and would go on to become the inspiration behind the name.
‘Nanny Goat Vineyard’ seemed to perfectly encapsulate our determination to succeed, adapt and thrive in the rugged and often extreme climates of Central Otago; much like the nimble and sure-footed wild goats of the region have done before us. From our inception and the inaugural release of our Pinot Noir in 2005, Nanny Goat Vineyard has strived to produce wines with elegance, concentration and balance whilst allowing each individual parcel of fruit to tell its unique story.
Nanny Goat Vineyard is named
after the wild goats that roam
the mountainous terrain of
Central Otago.
Nestled within a timeless and sensual landscape, Nanny Goat Estate Vineyard sits between 270m and 290m above sea level spread across two ancient, North East facing terraces. This is a region of climatic extremes with typically very hot summers, short autumns and bitterly cold winter days. Challenging conditions for producing world-class cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Successive periods of glaciation and recession, followed by erosion by Mata Au / Clutha River have shaped the Nanny Goat Estate landscape by creating distinct terraces of alluvial soils that are pastiche of loess, gravel, schist and mineral quartz. Generations of farming and the associated cultivation of lucerne and other feed crops have added organic matter to the wind blowen loessial topsoil providing us with a nice balance between vine vigor and free draining attributes.
QUEENSBERRY
Our Vineyard & Cellar Door are in the Queensberry Sub Region, approximately halfway between Cromwell and Wanaka alongside Mata Au/Clutha River at the base of the of the Northern end of the Pisa Mountain range. Today, the 26.3 Hectare estate has 18.69Ha under vine, 85% Pinot Noir, 8% Chardonnay and 7% Pinot Gris. The vineyard was initially planted in 2004 (Blocks 1 - 14, 16), 2008 (Block 17) and 2021 (Block 15, 18-29) following the acquisition of the roadside block.
Our Single Vineyard Pinot Noir & Chardonnay are exclusively sourced from our BioGro certified organic Vineyard in Queensberry. The wines have a powerful and unique elegance indicative of our Vineyard. The wines are rich and densely structured yet at the same time supple and beautifully perfumed, quintessentially Queensberry
Forging our own path to
the perfect pinot in Queensberry.
The home of Nanny Goat Vineyard.
At latitude 45° South, New Zealand’s Central Otago is the most southerly wine region in the world. Vineyards are planted between 200m and 400m above sea level. Each vintage, we work with our Grower partners at Vela Vineyard, Legend Terrace Vineyard & Tankersley Vineyard to source Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Pisa, Gibbston, Bannockburn & Queensberry.
Central Otago is the only area in New Zealand that has a semi-continental climate and experiences greater diurnal shifts in temperature and more seasonal extremes than any other wine-growing region in New Zealand. The diurnal shift in temperature can involve daytime temperatures in excess of 30° and nights with temperatures dropping as low as 0°. This wide swing in temperature aids the development of flavor complexity in the fruit while retaining natural acidity.
UNIQUE TERROIR
The unique terroir of Central Otago produces wines of extraordinary intensity and distinction that show varietal and regional definition. The soils are free draining, with poor natural fertility. These challenging conditions for producing world-class cool climate wines are integral in our pursuit of magic.

Growing up in the small town of Roxburgh, not far from what are now the internationally renowned Central Otago wine growing sub-regions, instilled in Alan a love of the rugged beauty and boldly contrasting extremes of this this unique terroir.
Each vintage, Alan and the team work closely to produce wines that are expressive not only of Central Otago but of the overarching vintage conditions. You will note variations from vintage to vintage and followers of Nanny Goat can clearly define this journey.
Handpicked and hand sorted, the utmost care is given to all fruit before spending time in open top stainlesssteel tanks for fermentation. Alan seeks to retain as many whole berries as possible and whole bunch components are crucial to creating depth and profile in our wines. Our four Nanny Goat Pinot Noir’s see between 11-13 months in 225 litre French oak barriques - between 35-40% new oak each year. Nanny Goat Chardonnay also spends 9 months in barrel; 500 litre French oak puncheons.
“In this region, whichever way
you turn there is beauty to be
found, and as a winemaker it
is my job to make wines that
interpret this beauty.”

Nanny Goat Vineyard in Queensberry is proud to be accredited both Biogro Organic and Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ). Biogro Organic certification at Queensberry was achieved in 2019 with further additional plantings to transition to organic practices as the vines establish.
SUSTAINABILITY & ORGANICS
As vignerons our primary role is to act with consideration, responsibility and care with both our own vineyard and those of our grower partners. Since our first release in 2005, we have taken active measures to understand, educate and implement sustainable measures in the vineyard, at the winery and in our Cellar door.
We are fortunate to have long term partnerships with Vela Vineyard, Legend Terrace Vineyard & Tankersley Vineyard whom each share a similar philosophy to viticultural sustainability. To help attract beneficial insects and increase the biodiversity within the vineyard, Phacelia and Buckwheat crops are planted in the inter-rows.
ALAN PETERS-OSWALD
WINEMAKER
Growing up in Roxburgh, just out of Central Otago means Alan is no stranger to this unique terrior. Moving away from Central Otago at the age of 10 did not extinguish his passion for the region, and after gaining an interest in horticulture during his high school years, his curiosity in viticulture was sparked by the blooming vineyard plantings in Central Otago. This curiosity of viticulture led him to Marlborough where he gained a Diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production – and above all, a passion for wine.
PADDY WOODMAN
CELLAR DOOR MANAGER
You’ll find him pouring wine and prepping platters at our Cellar Door. Paddy's been slinging wine all over the South Island for the last 10 years and the newest recruit to the Nanny Goat Vineyard Team. Full of passion, Paddy won't allow you to leave until he's shared all things the pursuit of magic over a taste of Pinot or four. That passion extends to our wine club too, fair to say it'll be Paddy you're talking to the next time you select wines for your Memeber's Selection six pack.
